Out of the Ashes

This week, a fire tore through a small community near our old home in Antipolo. In just a few hours, more than 25 families lost everything. Another 7–10 homes were severely damaged. Today, over 30 families are sleeping in tents set up inside a covered basketball court; waiting, grieving, trying to process what just happened. Yesterday, our home church jumped into action. We brought food. We brought prayer. But most of all, we brought the hope of Jesus.
One moment in particular is still sitting heavy on my heart. A young mother stood there holding her 10-day-old baby. Imagine giving birth… and then losing your home a week later. She was strong at first. Composed. Smiling. Letting her friend hold her newborn as Pastor Jun shared the Gospel and we began praying for families. After she received food and relief items, we asked if we could pray for her. As we spoke peace over her mind and invited the healing presence of Jesus into her trauma, the tears she had been holding back began to fall.
She didn’t need advice. She didn’t need answers. She just needed a safe place to let it all out. So we cried with her. And together, we called on our true source of hope. By the time we finished praying, the atmosphere had changed. The grief was still real- but so was the peace of God. As we were preparing to leave, she suddenly ran after us just to hug us again and say thank you one more time. It was humbling to be trusted with her tears.
In moments like these, we are reminded why we are here. We cannot prevent every fire. We cannot undo every tragedy. But we can show up. We can carry His presence into the ashes. We can be His hands and feet. Because you give, we can respond immediately when a crisis hits. Your prayers and generosity allow hope to arrive quickly. Please continue to pray for these families- especially for this brave young mother and her newborn, as they begin the long road of rebuilding. We hope to visit these families again soon..
